Google News RSS's <description> field carries no article summary — here's what's actually in it

The <description> element in Google News's RSS feed looks like it should hold a summary. On 103/103 measured items it was just the headline again. Here's what it really contains, and where a real summary comes from.

If you've scraped Google News's RSS feeds (news.google.com/rss/search?q=...), you've probably assumed the <description> element holds an article summary — that's what a <description> is for in RSS, and Google's own feed even wraps it in <![CDATA[...]]> like it's real prose. We assumed the same thing when we first built google-news-scraper and shipped a snippet field sourced from it. It doesn't hold a summary. We measured it live across two full search feeds (103 and 101 items) to be sure before writing this.

What <description> actually contains

For a normal, unclustered article, the <description> element is HTML containing exactly one <a> tag, and that tag's text is the headline again — the same string as <title>, just without the - Publisher suffix Google appends to titles. Measured on both feeds: 103/103 items, the <description>'s link text equaled title with the trailing " - " + source stripped off. There is no second sentence, no teaser, no excerpt of the article body anywhere in the element. Google News RSS does not carry article summaries at all — not hidden under a different tag, not truncated, just absent.

That's the whole element: one link (headline text, minus suffix) and one <font> tag naming the publisher. If your scraper reads <description> expecting a summary, you're getting the headline back under a different name.

The one case where <description> does carry unique data

When Google clusters multiple outlets' coverage of the same story, the <description> for the cluster's lead item becomes an <ol> with one <a>/<font> pair per related outlet — each a different publisher's own headline and name, not the lead item's. This is genuinely useful (it's essentially free related-coverage data, zero extra requests) but it's rare: 1 of 103 items in our sample had it. The trap here is indexing: the <font> tags are offset by one from the <a> tags in the raw HTML (the lead item's own publisher font comes first), so a naive same-index zip pairs every related article with the wrong outlet. We verified this live — two related entries that should have read "The New York Times" and "CNBC" came back both labeled "BBC" until the offset was fixed.

Where a real summary actually comes from

There isn't one in the RSS feed, full stop. To get an actual article description, you have to fetch the publisher's own page and read its Article JSON-LD description field (or the <meta name="description"> fallback) — a second HTTP request per article, to a different host, that Google's feed gives you no shortcut around.

What we shipped

google-news-scraper kept the snippet field (existing pipelines read it, and it's technically harmless — it's just the title again) but now documents plainly that it duplicates the headline, and added articleDescription — sourced from the publisher page's own JSON-LD when fetchArticleBody is on — as the field that actually holds a summary. We also shipped relatedArticles off the same clustered-<description> parsing described above, with the font/link pairing bug already fixed, plus titleClean (headline with the publisher suffix stripped — present on 204/204 titles across both measured feeds) and sourceDomain.

If you're already pulling from Google News RSS and trusting <description> for anything beyond "the headline, again," it's worth checking your own pipeline against a live feed rather than the docs — there aren't any docs for this feed to begin with.
