The App Store's per-star ratings breakdown isn't in any of Apple's APIs — it's in the page's JSON blob

Neither itunes.apple.com/lookup nor the review RSS feed carries the 5-star-to-1-star histogram. It's server-rendered into every App Store product page instead, and you can recover it, verify its order, and sanity-check it against Apple's own published average.

Every App Store listing shows you a star average and a bar chart: how many 5-star ratings, how many 1-star, and so on. It's one of the more useful numbers on the page — a product with a 4.7 average built from mostly 5s and a handful of 1s reads very differently from the same 4.7 built from a pile of 3s and 5s. Neither of Apple's two review-facing APIs gives you it.

Where it isn't

itunes.apple.com/lookup gives you the average and the total, and stops there:

No breakdown. And the review RSS feed (itunes.apple.com/us/rss/customerreviews/id=.../json) doesn't carry ratings data at all — its top-level keys are just author, entry, updated, rights, title, icon, link, id. It's a feed of individual written reviews, not a ratings summary.

Where it is

The public App Store product page — apps.apple.com/<country>/app/id<appId>, no login, no token — server-renders a <script type="application/json" id="serialized-server-data"> blob. Buried in it is a node tagged "$kind": "Ratings":

That's Instagram on the US storefront, pulled live while writing this. ratingCounts is a 5-element array. Two things about it are worth checking before you trust it rather than assuming them:

The order. Nothing in the payload labels which element is which star rating. Pulled the same node for Instagram on the GB storefront to get an independent data set to check against:

Reconstructing the average from ratingCounts assuming a 5★ → 1★ order and weighting each bucket by its star count (5·c0 + 4·c1 + 3·c2 + 2·c3 + 1·c4, divided by the total) reproduces Apple's own published ratingAverage on both storefronts. Assuming the reverse order (1★ → 5★) gives a mean around 1.3 on both — obviously wrong, since the page itself says 4.7. So the order is 5★ first, confirmed by cross-checking against a number Apple publishes independently, not assumed from field position.

The counts are floats, not integers — 2000234.9999999998 is a 4-star count, not a fractional rating. Round before you use them, or downstream code that expects an integer will get confused by a .9999999998 slipping through equality checks.

They sum exactly to the total. 25284650 + 2000235 + 696048 + 274710 + 1226159 = 29481802, matching totalNumberOfRatings to the row. Checked on 5 apps across 3 storefronts (Instagram, Threads, Spotify, YouTube, WhatsApp on us/gb/de) while building this — held every time.

This is a different number from the review feed's total

Worth knowing before you're surprised by it: totalNumberOfRatings from this blob and userRatingCount from the lookup API are two different Apple figures, updated on slightly different schedules — Instagram read 29481802 from the page and 29480285 from the lookup API in the same few minutes, a gap of about 1500 out of 29.4M. Both are real; they just aren't the same snapshot. If you need the number that the histogram sums to exactly, use the page's total, not the lookup API's.

Don't ship an unverified order

The order-check above isn't a one-time thing you do and then hardcode — it's worth running per request, because "the array happens to be 5★-first today" is Apple's implementation detail, not a contract. If a future response's weighted mean stops matching the page's own ratingAverage, the safer move is to drop the histogram for that row and say why, not publish a bar chart that might be exactly backwards:

What this isn't a route to

While in the page's JSON looking for this, it's tempting to also look for a way past Apple's other well-known limit: the public review feed caps at 500 most-recent reviews per app per country. The page references amp-api-edge.apps.apple.com, which looked promising — except its bearer token, which used to be embedded directly in the page HTML, no longer is. No MEDIA_API meta tag, no raw token string anywhere in ~900 KB of markup; it's moved into a JS bundle instead. The page does inline about 8 reviews itself, with no developer responses, which isn't enough to be useful. So the 500-review cap stands for anything HTTP-only — this rating histogram is a genuinely separate, uncapped number, not a side door to more reviews.
